Toxin exposure in our Foods:What do wheat, barley, oats, flax, peas, lentils. dry beans and cane sugar have in common? The herbicide glyphosate is part of the Monsanto product called Roundup which is used as a dessicant or drying agent by farmers to prepare these foods for market. Eating these crops results in residues of glyphosate and its metabolite AMPA being ingested. These toxic compounds have been linked to possible DNA damage which can result in reproductive problems, infertility in men and possibly cancer. The WHO and the state of California have designated glyphosate as a probable carcinogen. Why is this chemical allowed in our food chain?
GMO crops are engineered to tolerate spraying with glyphosate herbicides which allows the destruction of weeds not crops. Weeds have become resistant to these chemicals so now increased chemicals are used on these crops to try and kill Super weeds, instead of less herbicide more is needed (or stronger herbicide such as 2,4D) Farmers have been trying to increase crop yields using these products but at what risk to public health- further investigation into the potential health risks of glyphosates is urgently needed. To avoid exposure to these herbicides buy local organic products or buy from a trusted local farmer you know does not use herbicides on their crops.
