Bill C-51 Amendments to the Food and Drug Act

May 29th, 2008 — As you may have heard in various news stories (CTV News) a controversial bill is being debated in the House of Commons and the publics voice is needed to ensure that what is best for the health of Canadians is carried through, not what is best for big business and big Pharma. I was recently in a local health food store speaking to a visitor from Germany who was amazed that she could just walk into the store and buy Vitamin E or a high-potency B Vitamin. As it stands in Germany, legislation had passed that made all "therapeutic products" perscription-only and therefore under the control of MDs, unfamiliar and untrained in their therapeutic use. As such it was difficult to access natural health products. As the current legislation stands (Bill C51) it by itself does not restrict access but is the first step towards tabling a bill similar to Germany's. A slippery slope indeed.
